July 20th - Sir John Soane Museum
Discover the extraordinary house and museum of Sir John Soane, one of the greatest English architects, who built and lived in it two centuries ago. The Museum has been kept as it was at the time of his death in 1837 and displays his vast collection of antiquities, furniture, sculptures, architectural models and paintings.
The most famous spaces in the house are those at the rear of the museum – the dome area, colonnade and museum corridor. The ingeniously designed Picture Gallery has walls composed of large 'moveable planes (like large cupboard doors) that allow it to house three times as many items as a space of this size could normally accommodate (the original hanging in this room was reinstated in January 2011). When visiting, it is necessary to request the planes to be opened and wait for a group to gather before this is done. Entry to the Museum is free.
There is no café at this Museum but there is a park in the area where we can have a picnic lunch.
We meet at Harrow on the Hill Station and travel together. Please contact Pam G by July 13th to let her know you are coming. (Leader Pam Lee)
August 17th—The Chelsea Physic Garden
Established in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, Chelsea Physic Garden is home to over 4,500 medicinal, edible and useful plants. Visitors can explore the historic glasshouses, discover the plant collection, or simply relax and enjoy the four acres of green space in central London.
In the past the collection was kept for practical purposes with the Apothecaries using it to produce medicine for the people of London. During the 1st World War plants were harvested from the garden and used to treat soldiers. Today the Collection is maintained to help guests and researchers to understand the important role that plants play in our everyday lives, especially in the production and research of medicines.
There is a café at the Gardens where we can have lunch or bring a packed lunch.
Tickets £13.50 (concession)

EVITA
The London PAlladium
Thursday 10th July at 2:30pm
Expressions of interest are invited for a proposed theatre trip to The London Palladium to see Evita. This is a new production by Jamie Lloyd of the popular musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. The musical will run for only 3 months.
Decisions about booking discounted theatre tickets need to be taken quite quickly. We need to purchase at least 10 tickets to be able to access the U3A group discount rate. We have only been allocated 15 tickets as the show is very popular.
About the Play—The play tells the story of how Eva Perón rose from poverty to become the most powerful woman in Latin America. She became a symbol of hope to many in Argentina. The music of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber is well known and loved. Jamie Lloyd is an award-winning director who won high praise for his production of Evita in Regent’s Park. The cast for this show is yet to be announced.
Travel to the theatre will be by public transport.
Please contact: Theresa, as soon as possible.
