Date:
Thursday 26 August 2010 10.30am
Venue:
The Travellers’ Studio please note the venue
Speaker:
Hugh Davies
Title:
Bletchley and the Enigma Code
Info:
Hugh Davies spent most of his career in IT with major multi-nationals in a variety of roles. He has his own software company but is now retired and acts a guide at Bletchley Park. He gives many talks all around the country on WW2 Intelligence with an emphasis on the human factor.  The Germans considered their ciphers unbreakable; it would take 900 million years to break them. So how was it done and what were the affects? It is easier to beat the system than break the machine. Technology has changed, people have not.

Our Advanced German Conversation Group is becoming sadly depleted owing to ill health. We have places for two or three more German speakers. Our group is comprised of people who spoke German as children and have spent the last 30-70 or so years in England. We do not study grammar. Our meetings are slightly organized conversation followed, after a coffee break, by reading and translating extracts from current German newspapers. We meet in Kenton (Mount Stewart area) fortnightly on a Tuesday morning from 10.15 to 12.00pm.
If you are interested, please contact Irene Lawford on 0208 907 2790.

World Poverty
Benny Dembitzer, Director of Ethical Events writes

There is a global food famine looming round the corner, which will bring anything up to 2 billion people seriously to the bring of starvation. The catastrophe is likely to reach us in the next 18 to 24 months. There are various forces at play that will make this almost inevitable.  Whilst more food than ever before is being produced, it does not reach the poorest. He has written a book The Attack on World Poverty author Benny Dembitzer

SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

Harrow U3A’s Sustainability Group meets on the first Monday of each month at HAC. Sustainability means that humans should not use up renewable resources such as fish, soil, groundwater at a rate faster than that at which they regenerate. Non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, and minerals must be used no faster than renewable substitutes can be put in place. Pollution and waste must be emitted no faster than natural systems can absorb them.  This is an précised version of the article by Bryan Tyers in the current newsletter page 10. The latest minutes of the Sustainability Group are now on the 'Download' page together with questions and answers about the environmental impact of  Harrow council's plans for Harrow Transport.
A talk on
An Introduction to Materials, Energy and Carbon Footprint has been added July 18th 2010

Pianomania

More2Screen is a film distribution company that is working with the U3A Trust to create opera cinema screening events exclusively for U3A members.

A central theme to the film is the year spent by Pierre-Laurent Aimard preparing for the recording of Bach’s ‘Art of Fugue’ and how he works with Stefan Knüpfer to identify the right piano and then achieve that elusive perfect tone.  It gives a fascinating insight into the world of the concert pianist.

We are launching the film with a special event at the Curzon Mayfair cinema on 1 August where, after the film has screened, Pierre-Laurent Aimard will take part in a Question & Answer session with the film’s director Robert Cibis and  the Editor of Pianist Magazine, Erica Worth.

The nationwide release will follow on 20 August.

Here is an
e-flyer about the film and the launch event which we hope might be of interest to your members. If you would like to discuss this further or need any additional information contact 07876 124010.

Screening 5.45pm followed by Q&A 7.30pm.
Book now on 0871 7033 989 or online at www.curzoncinema.com/mayfair
Tickets are £12.50.
