CHAIRMAN’S SPRING MESSAGE
Well, another Spring and “we’re still here”! The council is remarkably reticent about future plans so we shall have to wait until the elections to see what action they take.
I am nearly half way through my term of office, presuming you let me stay, and am getting anxious about our committee’s future, apart from worries about HAC. We shall be losing our Vice-Chair in March and I keep scanning the faces at meetings looking for a likely replacement member. We have had several visitors to committee meetings and so far no-one has run screaming into the night. We are a friendly and supportive lot, always ready to step into the breach. Do please consider if you feel able to contribute to our wonderful organisation that is such an important part of so many people’s lives. We will carefully nurture anyone who is willing to have a try.
We will also need a new Publicity Officer. We’ve had a presence at two public events recently and have ideas for more to spread the word and get some new younger members.
We do try to take care of the groups. We’ve invested in a new (ish) hi-fi system to improve listening for jazz enthusiasts and also investigated whether the painting easels needed replacing. Luckily, they only required repairing. If you have any issues with equipment or any other aspect of your group do please ask your group leader to contact us.
We also ask you to talk to us about any problems with timings of room openings. We have a friendly relationship with the staff at HAC and do not want our good name tarnished by members complaining. The arrangement is that a room should be opened 10-15 minutes before the class starts, mistakes do happen of course, we are all human. We’ve requested that there should be more seating provided in the foyer near the lift if the weather is bad. A new company has been given the lift contract and so far it seems to be working well.
A new book group has been started by a member who wondered if anyone else shared his particular interest. There were enough to form a very happy and successful group. Have a think if you have a so far un-catered for interest; maybe there are some like-minded people out there. We will help you organise it.
A group of four of us have tackled the much-neglected sundial at the front of HAC. Many weeds and leaves were removed, improving its appearance considerably. Perhaps we can find other jobs around the building that we could volunteer for. Any suggestions?
